Marcus Moo - 13 September 2026

Marcus Moo will be our speaker on 13 September. He will share macro perspectives on the challenges in anti-human trafficking work in the region as well as upcoming interventions that protect and mitigate against the risks of trafficking.

Marcus is the Territorial Director of Social and Community Services and Social Justice for The Salvation Army across Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. He oversees a diverse portfolio spanning dementia care, youth development, prisoner reintegration, migrant worker well-being, anti-human trafficking, and urban refugee support. In Singapore, Marcus led a landmark shift in The Salvation Army's approach to children's services - moving away from ninety years of institutional care towards family-based and alternative care models.

Heather Askew - 27 September 2026

Heather Askew will be our speaker on 27 September. When I asked her to send me a photo, she sent a family photo. That says a lot about priorities as does her work providing foster care for local children!

Heather was a successful Los Angeles-based script supervisor in film and television for ten years before moving to Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2011 to work with and for underprivileged and marginalized people. Heather became immersed in the Thai and hill tribe peoples’ cultures and uses English and Thai in daily life. She spent three years as the Program Coordinator with Taw Saeng, an after school program for children living in slum communities, where she taught English and music and arranged field trips for the children.

Heather has been a foster and adoptive parent since 2011, and to date has provided foster care for 10 teenagers who are now young adults.

In 2014, Heather transitioned to working with HUG Project as a Case Manager. HUG Project works with children who have been victims of trafficking or sexual abuse and helps the families navigate the legal process. While with HUG Project, Heather was selected to attend the 2016 Vital Voices Global Freedom Exchange in Washington, DC. This is a program which brings together women from around the world who advocate for people facing issues including domestic violence, human trafficking and crimes against children.

With the assistance of a grant from Vital Voices, Heather co-founded Jojo’s Sanctuary in 2016 with her Thai colleagues Jay and Butsaba. In 2023, she earned her Master’s Degree in Child Advocacy and Policy from Montclair State University and has been using the knowledge she gained to continue to advocate for marginalized people and expand the work Jojo’s Sanctuary does in the Thai community.

At Jojo’s Sanctuary, they believe every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing family, free of exploitation. For the past 10 years, Jojo’s Sanctuary has been supporting family stability and preservation by working to educate, protect and empower vulnerable children, families and communities around Northern Thailand.

The meeting will be on Sunday 27 September at the Tulou Restaurant, Chiang Mai. Lunch is at 12:30 and the formal meeting will begin at 13:30. Rotarians, Rotaractors, Rotary Peace Fellows and invited guests are welcome. The lunch cost will be ฿350. Please notify president@rotaryclubchiangmaiwattana.org not later than 24 September that you will attend so we can coordinate with the restaurant.

Siriluck Chaiyawong - 23 August 2026

District Governor Elect Siriluck Chaiyawong was our speaker on 23 August 2026. Her talk focused on Polio Plus and the fact that polio has increased in the region.

DGE Siriluck has been a Rotarian for more than 28 years. She was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Chiang Mai Phuping in 1997 and served as their 3rd President. Other notable Rotary service includes:

Prevention of Sexual Abuse in Chiang Mai

Project: Anti-Human Trafficking Training by Pongsawart Niyomca and Rotary Club of Chiang Mai Wattana D. 3360 on the topic of How to Avoid Being Trafficked.

Objective: to train the attendants to be aware of human trafficking in the present world and be able to teach other community members to prevent themselves and their loved ones from being trafficked, held on 17 August 2025, at Suandok Community, Chiang Mai for 30 minute training. Participants were Suandok Community Committee and Community Health Volunteer. Number of participants were 36 persons. Output from the training/orientation: the participants learned many things they had never known before. They learned how to prevent themselves from being lured and will be more alert and be closer to their loved ones.

Project: Life skills development to increase youth awareness (Student Planner) by Pongsawart Niyomca and Rotary Club of Chiang Mai Wattana D. 3360 on the topic of Personality Development. Objective: To enable students to learn how to have the appropriate internal and external personality, held on the 1st September 2025, at the Baan Poang School, San Sai District, Chiang Mai Province. There were 132 students attended. Topics of the training were as follows:

1) physical personality (body care and appearance),

2) verbal and communication personality (words and body language),

3) emotional and mental personality (emotional control, stability), and

4) intellectual personality (thinking, analyzing, and decision-making).

We start Rotary Year 2026-2027 as a very small club with huge ambitions. The hope is that we grow our active membership from 7 to 27 and add at least 10 associate members. Associate members must be active members of another club. We also are intent on establishing a sister club relationship with the Rotary Club to End Human Trafficking. We aim to be the first cause based club in Southeast Asia to combat the horrors of human trafficking!

In December we will participate in the Salvation Army's Asia Youth Leadership Summit-Chiang Mai
